AJK residents' CNIC stamping policy explained by NADRA

Regulatory Frictions of AJK Residency Stamp

The printing of the “Resident of AJK State” logo on CNICs is governed by clear rules at NADRA. The red imprint is for common CNICs and the black imprint is for intelligent computerized national identity cards. This designation is an essential component of CNIC and only individuals with a valid State Subject Certificate (Class 1, 2 or 3) from the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) can obtain this designation. This certificate is required for the residency status to be updated in the card.

Rumors Addressed by NADRA

Social media rumors regarding a supposed policy change by NADRA concerning stamping AJK residency/status have been negated. The rumors are baseless and have been circulated with malicious intentions: NADRA From December 2024 to January 2025, NADRA continued with its policy, providing more than 50,000 CNICs with the “Resident of AJK State” imprint.

Corrective Actions for Imprint Not Found

The imprint “Resident of AJK State” may in some cases be absent as the applicants did not submit the mandatory State Subject Certificate or due to any mistake in CNIC processing. NADRA has taken the initiative to reach out to all affected applicants, facilitating the free-of-cost reissue of revised CNICs. Also, they have been advised to apply afresh, deposit the prescribed fee, and submit the required documents to get an updated CNIC, as those candidates who did not submit the requisite certificate at first instance will not be able to get an updated CNIC.
